Floating Nail Sadhu Boards: How Dynamic Nails Work
What is a floating nail Sadhu board?
A floating nail Sadhu board uses nails that can move vertically instead of remaining fixed at one height. In the POPOVYCH design, each nail moves independently under load and returns when the load is removed. The available travel is up to 10 mm. This is why this construction is also described as a dynamic Sadhu board.
The mechanism allows the contact pattern to respond to the shape of the foot. The actual sensation depends on the person, nail spacing, positioning and load. A moving mechanism does not make nail standing painless or suitable for everyone.
Dynamic nail travel and nail spacing are different measurements
Nail spacing is the distance between neighbouring nails across the board. Nail travel is the distance a floating nail can move vertically. A board can have 10 mm spacing and up to 10 mm travel; these numbers describe different properties.
When comparing a dynamic Sadhu board with another product, ask the maker to state both measurements. Also check what happens when a nail is loaded, whether it returns freely, and what care the mechanism requires. A photograph alone cannot establish these details.
Floating vs fixed nail Sadhu boards
| Feature | Floating nails | Fixed nails |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Nails move independently under load. | Nails remain secured in the base. |
| Construction | Includes the moving mechanism. | A simpler fixed construction. |
| What to check | Free movement and return, as well as the base and nail tips. | Nail alignment, fastening, base and nail tips. |
| Materials | Choose the metal and wood separately from the mechanism. | The same material choice remains a separate decision. |
| Price | The mechanism adds manufacturing complexity. | Can be the more economical choice. |
Choose by the construction you want and the budget you are comfortable with. A more expensive board is not evidence of a stronger medical or psychological effect.
Are floating nail boards a good choice for beginners?
POPOVYCH recommends comparing a 10 mm nail spacing option for a first board. Some owners describe a gentler initial contact with the floating construction. That is personal feedback, not a promise of identical comfort or safety for every user.
If you already practise, choose familiar spacing rather than assuming floating nails make any wider spacing easy. Read the Sadhu board selection guide and beginner practice guidance before ordering.
Copper, galvanised steel or brass: choose the material separately
Our main floating collection combines solid ash or thermally modified ash with copper, zinc-coated steel or brass nails. The nail metal changes the appearance, care requirements and price; it does not replace the moving mechanism.
Copper naturally develops a darker patina. Brass is a copper-zinc alloy. Galvanised nails are steel with a zinc coating. See the comparison of Sadhu board materials and the current models and prices for available combinations.
How the workshop checks a floating board
Mykola Popovych has developed the workshop’s floating design since 2021. The base geometry is machined, then the wood is sanded and finished by hand. Nails are manually sorted by height, their surfaces and tips are inspected, and movement is checked after assembly.
This describes the workshop’s production process. It is not an independent certification or a published laboratory durability test. Learn more about the POPOVYCH workshop.
What an owner says about floating nails
“I have the floating-nail version. Great quality and a great seller. I recommend it.”

Care, movement checks and support
Keep the boards dry and remove loose debris gently. Do not soak the base or force a nail that sticks. Before use, look for damage and check that the moving parts behave normally. Stop using a damaged board or a nail that does not return, and contact the workshop with a photo or short video.
